Wave Battler Builds: Cards, Evolutions, Abilities and Skill Tree

Wave Battler builds explained: every shop card, Rares and Legendaries, card evolutions at levels 3 and 6, the six abilities, the skill tree and ship skins.

A Wave Battler build is the stack of cards you collect during one run, shaped by the skill tree you carry between runs. In this wave survival game the shop sells plain card levels, bosses pay Rares and Legendaries, and six card lines evolve on their own. This guide walks through all of it.

The 18 shop cards

The shop shows three cards (four with the High roller talent). Every card is a level, and prices rise with each copy you own. The first slot leans toward a card you already have. You get one refresh per shop, and each refresh in a run costs more than the last. A card stops appearing once it reaches its useful limit.

Rarities: where each card comes from

  • Common: the 18 shop cards above.
  • Rare: a boss reward. Pick one of three on boss waves 5, 10, 15, 25 and on. You hold up to four; after that a boss lets you swap one. Examples: Executioner (×2 damage under 25% health), Giant Slayer (+40% to elites and bosses), Momentum (up to +50% damage while moving), Second Skin (a shield that eats one hit every 12s).
  • Legendary: one per run, chosen on wave 20. One Shot, Glass Heart, Swarm Lord, Time Thief and Gorilla Warfare are always in the pool; the tree adds Speed Demon, King of the Jungle and Fortress.
  • Evolution: earned by card levels, never bought (below).
  • Devil card: only the Devil pays these. See the Devil deals guide.

Card evolutions at level 3 and level 6

Six cards evolve. When you buy level 3 the game stops and you choose a path. Level 6 completes that path on its own. A third path on some cards opens on the skill tree.

CardPath A (final)Path B (final)Tree path (final)
Twin shotSpreadfire (Bullet Storm)Focus Fire (Rail Salvo)Helix (Corkscrew)

There is one more: Bulwark, given automatically once you own 3 Padding and 2 Thornmail. Your thorns become an aura and you take 15% less damage.

The six abilities

AbilityWhat it doesCooldownWhere it comes from
Thunder ClapShockwave around you: damage and knockback11sYou start with it
RailgunA beam at the toughest enemy on screen, through everything in line12sGunner branch
Afterburner4s of +70% speed and +40% fire rate, dashes refilled15sRunner branch
JackpotA slot machine: coins, a blast, a freeze or a gorilla16sGambler branch
Deep FreezeFreezes everything near you solid17sFrost branch
Lil GorillaDrops a helper that shoots for you21sGorilla branch

Each ability has three levels on the tree. Level II is a fork (Thunder Clap picks Wide or Stunner, for example) and level III adds a final upgrade. You equip one on the Loadout step before a run.

The skill tree

Six branches: Gunner (bullets, fire rate), Runner (speed, dashes, the skip portal), Gambler (coins, the Devil), Gorilla (helpers and allies), Bulwark (health, thorns) and Frost (chill and freezes). Each has small always-on boosts, a starting kit, talents, an ability, new cards for your runs, a trial you unlock by doing something in a run, and two keystones.

  • Talents only work while slotted. You have 3 slots, rising to 8 with account levels and a Brutal clear.
  • Keystones are big rule changes. Only two can run at once, and Juggernaut (no dash) cannot run with Slipstream or Hit & Run.
  • Bridges sit between neighbouring branches and need 5 nodes in both. Only one bridge can be slotted at a time.
  • Kits start every run with cards bought, such as the Marksman's kit (Twin shot and Sharper) or the Winter kit (Chill field ×2).
  • Resetting the tree is free and gives back every point.

Ship skins

Skins change looks only: the same hitbox, speed, guns and dash. Neon Grid has 8 ships and Deep Drift has 9 subs, and each world remembers its own pick. You choose on the Loadout step; skins show in solo runs, while co-op keeps the two team colours.

  • Basic: a different ship or sub. Free.
  • Rare: adds its own colour on shots, muzzle flash and dash. Free.
  • Epic: its own shots, dash and a look for all five abilities. On hqbg.ai an Epic unlocks for good after one rewarded ad.
  • Legendary: living parts and a dash of its own (Void Reaper, Celestial Dragon, Kraken, Moonwhale). A paid unlock on the website, tied to your account.

Example builds that fit together

Gunner

Boss shredder

Twin shot into Focus Fire (Rail Salvo at 6), Sharper and Quick hands. Take Giant Slayer and Executioner from bosses. Can Opener strips boss armor.

Frost

Deep freeze

Winter kit, Chill field into Deep Winter or Frostbite, Frozen Heart from a boss, and Deep Freeze as your ability.

Bulwark

Thorn wall

Warden's kit, Padding ×3 and Thornmail ×2 for Bulwark, then Retribution. Bodyguards into Fortress eat enemy shots.

Runner

Kite and dash

Light feet, Second wind and Momentum. Afterburner refills dashes; Gorilla Warfare turns every dash into an attack.

Which cards evolve in Wave Battler?

Twin shot, Chill field, Heavy rounds, Ricochet, Bodyguards and Bloodline. You pick a path at level 3 and it completes at level 6.

How do I get a Legendary card?

Beat the wave-20 boss. You pick one Legendary from three, and you can hold only one per run.

Do skins make my ship stronger?

No. Every skin has the same hitbox, speed and weapons. They change how your shots, dash and abilities look.

Can I reset the skill tree?

Yes, for free. Every point comes back and your feats stay earned.

What does Impossible do to my build?

Impossible turns the skill tree off for the run: no nodes, talents, keystones or kit, and your ability stays at level I.
