Pod Box Beginner's Guide: How to Play the Cozy Isopod Game

Start Pod Box right: mist the moss, feed Daisy, turn frass into coins, buy a male and breed your first mancae. A calm guide to the free isopod game.

Pod Box is a cozy isopod game you play in the browser. You start with one isopod, a Dairy Cow called Daisy, in a 5L plastic shoebox with a moss corner, leaf litter and a cork bark hide. You mist the soil, put out food, collect the little frass pellets she leaves and compost them into coins. Coins buy more isopods, food and helpers, and breeding uncovers colours hidden in their genes. Nothing dies and there is no rush.

This guide covers your first hour. When you are ready for colours, read the breeding guide. Play it at hqbg.ai/podbox. It is made for a computer with a mouse or trackpad.

Your first ten minutes

  1. 1

    Spray the moss corner

Press 💦 Spray, then hold the mouse button and drag over the moss in the corner. Leave the far side of the tub dry.

  2. 2

    Drop a carrot

Press 🥄 Feed and click in the tub. You start with 3 carrots. The tool switches off after each drop.

  3. 3

    Click the frass

Small pellets appear behind Daisy as she eats and wanders. Click them. This works with any tool selected.

  4. 4

    Compost five

With 5 frass, press 🫙 Compost. Every 5 frass becomes 5 coins, so one pellet is worth one coin.

  5. 5

    Buy a male

Open the Shop tab. A male Dairy Cow costs 12 coins. Then you can start pairing.

Daisy starts as a subadult. In Pod Box one real minute is one game day at normal speed, and a Dairy Cow is an adult from day 18. Click Daisy any time to open her profile in the Pod tab: sex, stage, age, generation, parents, what she is doing right now, and bars for hydration and fullness.

A Pod Box tub with a damp moss corner, leaf litter and a busy colony of isopods

Reading the box: care bars and mood

The panel shows five care bars, each GOOD, OK or LOW, and a mood for the whole box. The mood comes from a care score built from the five bars. A higher score means more frass, bigger broods and better breeding odds.

BarShare of careWhat keeps it up
Moisture30%A wet corner plus a dry side
Food22%Food in the tub, more for a bigger colony
Stability19%Leaving them alone; few clicks and sprays
Leaf Litter17%Oak leaves from the shop (6 coins, +35%)
Space12%Staying at or under the box's recommended size

The mood reads 😊 THRIVING, 🙂 OKAY, 😕 STRESSED or ⚠️ UNHEALTHY. Under it, a Why? list names the top problems in plain words, such as "Substrate is drying out", "No dry side left to choose", "Leaf litter is running low" or "Too much disturbance lately". When most of the colony is thirsty it says so first: "5 of 12 are dehydrated, mist a wider area". Fix the first line and check again.

The moisture gradient

Real isopod keepers give their animals a choice: one damp side, one dry side. Pod Box works the same way. The soil is a grid of damp and dry patches. Spraying wets the area under your mouse, and every patch dries a little each second. Wetter soil dries faster. The moss corner holds water much longer and never dries out completely, so there is always somewhere to drink.

  • Aim for an average dampness of about a third to a half, with roughly 14% to 38% of the floor properly wet.
  • Too dry and the isopods walk to the wettest spot and huddle there. A badly dehydrated isopod can't breed.
  • Too wet everywhere and the Why? list warns of mold risk and of no dry side to choose.
  • Spraying startles them. Short passes over the moss are better than soaking the whole tub.

Food, leaves and frass

FoodCostWhat it does
🥕 Carrot3 coinsCheap and cheerful, the basic meal
🌱 Pod Mix11 coinsBigger portion, more nutrition, rots about half as fast
🐟 Protein Mix20 coinsMost nutrition; while it is in the tub, pairings get +12% success

Pick the food under Tools, then use Feed. Food slowly rots and gets eaten, so a bigger colony needs more of it. Leaf litter also breaks down over time and faster in a crowded tub. Top it up with Oak Leaves from the shop. Frass comes faster from a happy, well fed, well watered colony, and adults drop more than babies.

Your first pairing

  1. 1

    Click a female

Open her profile and press ❤️ Pair…. The button works once she is past the manca stage, rested and not thirsty.

  2. 2

    Choose a partner

The list shows every eligible male with his stage and the chance this pairing takes, for example 82%.

  3. 3

    Watch them court

They walk to each other. When they meet, the journal says the pairing worked or "didn't take this time".

  4. 4

    Wait for the brood

A brooding female shows 🥚 and a countdown. For Dairy Cows it is 5 game days, then up to 8 mancae emerge.

Mancae are pale babies. They grow into subadults at day 6 and adults at day 18, with a short moult each time. In the Colony tab you can also press Let them breed on their own: healthy isopods then pair up by themselves when the box is in good shape, and it pauses once the tub is full. For planned colours, pair by hand. The orders and upgrades guide covers what to do with all the babies.

Day, night, speed and saving

  • Each game day has a day part and a night part. In daylight the isopods often rest under the cork bark. At night they come out and move faster.
  • The 🔦 Flashlight lets you watch at night, but it slowly startles them. Turn it off when you are done looking.
  • Clicking an isopod also startles it a little. If disturbance climbs too high, everyone runs under the bark until it calms down.
  • Game speed has 1×, 3× and 10×. Spraying always runs in real time.
  • The game saves itself in your browser every 20 seconds and after big moments. Time stops while the tab is closed, so nothing happens while you are away.
  • The tub has no sound effects or music. It is a quiet game.
Can my isopods die in Pod Box?

No. Neglect slows things down: a dry or hungry box makes less frass and breeds less. Nothing dies, and the moss corner always stays a little damp.

How do I get coins in Pod Box?

Click frass pellets and compost them, 5 frass for 5 coins. Later, buyer orders in the Orders tab pay much more than selling isopods one by one.

Why won't my isopods breed?

Check that you have a female and a male of the same species, both past the manca stage, rested after the last brood and not dehydrated. A better care score also raises the chance.

Does Pod Box keep running when I close it?

No. The colony only lives while the tab is open. Your save waits in the browser exactly as you left it.

Can I play Pod Box on a phone?

It is made for a computer with a mouse or trackpad. The tub needs precise clicks and drags for frass and spraying.

Ready?

Put it into practice

Raise a colony of tiny isopods and breed new colours.
